What Is Minimally Invasive Surgery?

Minimally invasive surgery outcomes result in a quicker recovery from surgery and less pain.

It is performed through a small incision rather than a large, open incision that traditional surgeons use. Through this small incision, the surgeon is able to work through a tube with the assistance of a microscope to perform the surgery. This leads to less trauma to muscles, nerves and tissues, less bleeding, scarring, hospital time and trauma to organs. With a lesser amount of pain, patients are able to reduce the amount of narcotics taken after surgery.

The purpose of minimally invasive surgery is to stabilize the vertebral bones and spinal joints and to relieve the pressure being applied to the spinal nerves. This relieves problems that have resulted from conditions such as spinal instability, bone spurs, herniated discs, or spinal tumors.
